Functionally, acupuncture is the manipulation of the energy flow through the body. The goal is to balance and promote this flow as blockage causes pain and dysfunction. Certain points have been found to be energetically active and to relate to various organs or functions in the body. These points are adjusted (stimulated or sedated) by the use of needle insertion or injection of a fluid into the point area. Needles may be stimulated with electricity to open the channels or warmed with moxa (an herb) to promote energy flow.
Acupuncture is a very effective treatment for pain from arthritis or disc disease. It can be used to balance endocrine function and the general metabolism. Acupuncture treatments produce improvements in 80% - 85% of patients surveyed. Treatments should be done weekly in most cases and the maximum improvement is generally achieved by six to eight treatments.
